Technology Addictions 101 part 2: Assessments and Interventions

Assessing technology addictions requires an understanding of several factors. How does culture affect the presentation of the problem and possible solutions? Is the problematic user coming to therapy on their own or being forced by their parents or partner? Should the clinician take a diagnostic or interference-based approach to assessment? After exploring these questions, this workshop will look at common and unique interventions that can be employed at both individual and systemic levels. Interventions will include traditional approaches like family therapy and CBT, along with technology-specific approaches like using video game avatars to explore identity or reviewing social media posts with clients to elicit unmet psychological needs that may have been met by posting.
